We’re extremely fond of our *fully reversible!!* & zero-waste patch kantha jackets! The style is eminently suitable for those with an artistic disposition - each piece is a work of textile art that showcases a range of India’s finest textiles, held together with very fine double kantha.

 

This is a conversation starter and a vertible textile atlas of India: each piece utilises fabric we've created with our partners across India, including but not limited to: kantha, block print, clamp dye, bandhani, block print, ajrakh, dabu, jamdani, ikat...

• Crafted from hand patched & quilted cloth. The patches are cuttings of our pre-consumer waste cloth, combined in stunning colourways, then carefully cut, positioned and hand-stitched in place. The patches have raw edges which may result in loose threads; some coats have more than others. The cloth is then covered in fine, double kantha - tight rows of hand-embroidery running both lengthwise & widthwise across the cloth.

• Fabric: Outer is a mix of cotton, linen, silk & wool; inner is a silk cotton blend
• Handfeel: Soft & thick with a heap of texture from the raw edges of the patches & the kantha embroidery
• Care: Gentle hand wash separately in cold water using mild detergent. Do not use conditioner. Do not soak. Colours may bleed slightly. Gentle steam iron. Drip dry flat in the shade

Textile Story

 

Each of our textiles holds a story of the effort & skill required to hand craft it, and, as such, is precious to us. No scrap, however small, goes to waste. This capsule collection - inspired by the patchwork robes of wandering dervishes - uses leftovers of textiles we've lovingly archived from our various collections. 

 

The fabric pieces are first matched together in our Delhi studio with an attentive eye to colour stories & pattern. Our partner artisans then carefully cut, patch and quilt the scraps.

 

These layers are quilted in double kantha embroidery, in which women hand sew rows of tiny running stitch from end to end to provide strength and enable the recycling of saris. This kantha creates a rich, rippling effect across the fabric & adds a unique texture to the products. 

 

Kantha is a tradition of hand embroidering patchwork cloth from rags. Over time it evolved from a simple running stitch into a rich & varied embroidery language, depicting motifs influenced by religion, culture & the rural lives of the women stitching them. Deeply rooted in Bengal & with a history of over 3,000 years, kantha is rich in story & meaning.

 

Whether it be a plain stitch on patched rags, or highly illustrative embroidery on the finest silk, this humble art form is created today as it has been for centuries: in small, unassuming village homes by women who spend days, weeks & even months on one piece.

 

Each piece is completely unique - you will never see the same combination & layout of fabrics and threads twice. Any variations or irregularities are to be celebrated. They are part of the design & inherent to the handcrafted production process, making this item beautifully unique.
