Reversible Kantha Patch Chapan | oceana
We’re extremely fond of our zero-waste patch kantha jackets! The style is eminently suitable for those with an artistic disposition - each piece is a work of textile art that showcases a range of India’s finest textiles, held together with fine, double kantha.
This is a conversation starter and heirloom piece that is worthy of it’s own museum exhibition. I personally spend hours sorting through bags of our pre-consumer textile waste, building colour stories that are an archive of all the artisanal textiles we work with across India, including but not limited to: kantha, block print, clamp dye, bandhani, block print, ajrakh, dabu, jamdani, ikat.... Our kantha artisans then cut and place the scrap on a backing fabric (also carefully selected from our pre consumer waste) and cover the cloth in running kantha embroidery.
- Fully reversible - one side in patch; the reverse is plain, showcasing the art of kantha
- Chapan is a traditional Central Asian coat; our design is modelled on a vintage chapan I picked up in Tajikistan, a salute to this unique style. Crafted using narrow panels in the body to give flare to the silhouette
- Relaxed fit
- Full length
- Dropped shoulder with long, tapered sleeves, designed for rolling back the cuff to show the contrast reverse
- Open neckline, closing in front with a hand beaten brass button
- Zero waste
- Crafted from hand patched & quilted cloth. The patches are cuttings of our pre-consumer waste cloth, combined in stunning colourways, then carefully cut, positioned and hand-stitched in place. The patches have raw edges. The cloth is then covered in fine, double kantha - tight rows of hand-embroidery running both lengthwise & widthwise across the cloth.
- All orders come lovingly packed in upcycled silk bags
