Siddi Duster I
This extraordinary textile is a kavand, created by Siddi women quilters from Karnataka in collaboration with textile artist and curator Anitha N. Reddy.
The Siddis are an Indian community of African ancestry, with a distinctive textile tradition shaped by resourcefulness, memory and use. Kavands are constructed from fragments of reclaimed cloth - in this case, our own pre-consumer fabric remnants - intuitively layered and secured by hand with dense, rhythmic rows of running stitch. Colour, pattern and scale are brought together without a fixed blueprint, allowing the eye and instinct of each individual maker to guide the composition.
In this coat, that richly improvised surface becomes something entirely new: a generous, sculptural garment in which every fragment, join and hand stitch remains visible. It is both exuberant and deeply practical, carrying the history of many fabrics and the unmistakable hand of its makers.
No two kavands are ever alike, and there will never be another coat quite like this one.
