Textile Story
Ikat is an ancient dyeing and weaving process found around the world, including India, Japan, China and Central Asia. Ikat refers to the dyeing process, whereby prior to dyeing, the yarn is meticulously tied with string in pre-determined locations then dyed, resulting in tied areas resisting the dye. The yarn is untied and retied for each new colour.
This cloth is known as adras in Uzbekistan - it is a warp ikat in a blend of mulberry silk and cotton with typically large and bold motifs distinct to Uzbekistan. The cloth is woven on narrow looms which produce running yardage of around half a meter width.
Any variations or irregularities are to be celebrated. They are part of the design & inherent to the handcrafted production process, making this item beautifully unique.
