Textile Story
Though lesser known than India's celebrated cottons and silks, ramie has long been cultivated in the humid landscapes of the country's Northeast, where the climate is ideally suited to this ancient bast fibre from the nettle family.
Grown in states including Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, ramie has remained a quiet part of India's textile heritage, valued for its strength, breathability, and natural lustre but produced only on a small scale through labour-intensive methods.
Harvested from the plant's stems, the fibre undergoes a meticulous process of extraction, degumming, spinning, and weaving before it becomes cloth. This demanding journey has kept ramie a comparatively rare handloom textile, appreciated by skilled weavers for its distinctive character rather than mass production.
The resulting fabric is lightweight yet remarkably durable, with a gently textured surface, subtle sheen, and a beautifully weighty drape that falls in rich, sculptural folds. Cool against the skin and exceptionally breathable, ramie softens with wear while retaining the quiet strength and integrity that have made it one of Asia's oldest and most enduring natural fibres.
