Vintage Japanese kimono, selected for its textile quality, craftsmanship, and wearability. Traditionally worn as robes, these garments lend themselves naturally to contemporary dressing.
- Era: Mid-late Shōwa period (c. 1950s–1980s)
- Textile: Fine, light weight hemp, yarn dyed in a natural Aizome (indigo) vat. Woven from traditional Japanese asa (麻), a lightweight bast fibre textile typically made from ramie or hemp. Wide, dramatic Tamoto (swinging kimono sleeves) with open underarms (Miyatsukuchi), maximize ventilation and airflow during hot months. The crisp, semi-sheer weave keeps the cloth away from the body in Japan's humid summers. The muted blue-grey palette is characteristic of traditional summer dress, highlighting the natural texture and subtle lustre of the bast fibres.
