Textile Story
The slowest of our slow-made clothing: it takes our textile partner, Aparupa, four weeks to make just 12 meters of this cloth. Each fabric is completely unique and crafted by hand.
Aparupa is based in Kolkata and works on contemporary interpretations of traditional block print and fabric painting. In the course of her work, splatters and flecks from the print master’s blocks and brush strokes work their way down into the protective layers of cloth that pad and absorb pigment seepage on the printing table - what is known in the industry as drop cloth.
These layers of fabric acquire a completely accidental and unusual expression of colour that are painterly; avant-garde even. But the coarse cotton canvas used as standard for drop cloth is stiff and hard, so Aparupa experimented with swapping out the second layer of drop cloth with a soft silk crepe and the result is this exceptional, rare and precious cloth. Any variations or irregularities are part of the design and inherent to the production process.
