Uzbek Ikat Scarf | violet & blue

Our collection of exquisite Uzbek ikat textiles are handmade according to centuries-old techniques by a team of women and men artisans, working under a 9th generation, UNESCO-award winning Master Weaver in Ferghana Valley, Uzbekistan.

The creation of authentic, handmade ikat requires up to 100 individual steps from the breeding of the silk worms to the production of the final cloth. It's no wonder then that some cultures believe ikat fabric is imbued with magical powers, due to the time and skill involved in creating it.

Our ikat textiles are the result of an extremely laborious and highly-skilled process whereby threads are meticulously tied, bound and dyed using a mix of natural and AZO-free dyes, and finally hand woven by women weavers. Any variations or irregularities are part of the design and inherent to the production process.

On sustainability:

- Eco: hand weaving means the production process is carbon neutral and creates no toxic waste. Partially dyed using natural dyes also reduces waste.

- Artisan-sourced: sourced directly from the weavers. Hand-weaving of ikat in Uzbekistan is a dying art with much replaced by machine-weaving. Support to master weavers helps to preserve this art.
