Textile Story

 

The tradition of recycling saris in India is an old one. While saris are most often kept for decades, or handed down to people close to the family, used or old pieces are also sold to 'bhandiwalis'. 'Bhandi' means utensils in Hindi as the saris are often traded for steel utensils. 

 

We hand pick each and every one of our saris from a community of Gujarati sari traders in Delhi. These sari traders themselves source the saris from a network of bhandiwalis who travel across India, buying and bartering goods for old saris, village by village and house by house.

 

Working with only the most beautiful, hand picked silk saris, our stitching unit in Delhi crafts these into Japanese kimonos, based on the design of a vintage Kimono from our personal collection. Although we edit out saris with defects, please do be aware that this collection is made from recycled fabrics and as such, there may be slight imperfections which are part of their textile story.
