A simple cut with a silhouette of undulating drapes, this one-size, open-fronted robe is designed to showcase our most beautiful fabrics. This style is crafted in ahimsa (non-violent) mulberry silk: it's hand spun and hand woven. This piece is printed in ajrakh - a complex hand block printing technique using exclusively natural dyes and mordants. It has an exquisite texture and softens beautifully with wear. This piece features mother of pearl buttons down the front.

Ahimsa Silk Dune Robe | ajrakh I
Conventional silk is produced through boiling silk worms in their cocoons, killings some 3,000 worms to produce one pound of silk. Ahimsa silk, also known as non-violent or peace silk, is a sustainable and ethical approach to silk production which does not involve killing the silk worm. It also provides employment to rural spinners and weavers. And it's not just sustainable; it also happens to have the most beautiful texture and drape of any silk we've seen!
Our Ahimsa Collection brings together a diverse range of artisans from across rural villages in India - once the moths have left the cocoon, they are collected by women silk farmers in South India and sent to East India for hand spinning and weaving by another group of artisans. The fabric is then naturally dyed in West India.
Silk spun and woven in this way retains properties lost during conventional means of silk production. Ahimsa silk is less lustrous than typical silk, but is incredibly soft and has a slubbed texture and an incredible drape. It retains warmth in winter and breathes in the heat so is comfortable to wear year round. Any variations or irregularities are part of the design and inherent to the production process.
- Eco: ahimsa silk is cruelty free as silk moths escape the cocoon before the boiling of the cocoons. Use of natural dyes and entirely handmade processes means the item is environmentally friendly and bio-degradable.
- Ethical: consisting of entirely handmade processes, this product provides a much-needed source of income to rural and often-marginalised artisans across India. Garments are stitched in our Delhi workshop where workers receive well above the minimum wage and enjoy flexible, safe and comfortable working conditions.
